A US Department of Transportation rule requires that all workers shall wear a safety vest in a federal roadway, which means a major collecter and above. Full effect on this law is takes place on November 24, 2008.

The Draft New Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices that should be out in late 2009 will increase that coverage to all roadways. The new law is a requirement of Congress due to the number of people who have been killed or injured while working in the roadways of this country.
