The City of Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works and the Pittsburgh Parking Authority are partnering to roll out an improved street-sweeping program for the 2025 season, making use of automated technology.

Dave Onorato, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Parking Authority said the charges are for safety and efficiency. "What we want with automated enforcement is to increase our speed and activity and be able to follow the sweeper effectively through the neighborhoods," said Onorato.

The Pittsburgh Parking Authority vehicles will now have smart cameras mounted on their roofs. Onorato said the drivers would follow behind the street sweeper and record the license plates of cars preventing the street sweeper from cleaning the street.

Any parking violation tickets issued will be delivered to owners through the mail. The 2025 Street Sweeping Program started Tuesday, April 1 and will run through Nov. 30. Residents are encouraged to check street signs along their block for scheduled sweeping times and parking restrictions.

"Our goal is to keep Pittsburgh's streets clean and safe for all residents," Mayor Ed Gainey said in a statement. "By integrating automated enforcement, we can improve compliance with parking regulations, making street sweeping more effective and ensuring our neighborhoods stay well-maintained."

Onorato said they expect to begin using the technology for other parking enforcement later this year.
