Driving the Risk Out of Public Fleet Management: Change Behavior, Improve Road Safety, Impact the Bottom Line

DriveCam Logo

Driver risk management solutions, assisted by in-cab video, are enabling municipalities to improve driver behavior. Video and audio evidence reveals what actually happened in collisions and "he said/she said" service issues -- exonerating drivers who are not at fault and supporting claims of process inefficiencies. These approaches are proven to improve driver safety and improve your bottom line.

Interview with Del Lisk, Vice-President
DriveCam, Inc., San Diego, CA

Del Lisk In this interview based on his APWA 2009 seminar, Del Lisk examines driver risk management solutions assisted by in-cab video technologies. The DriveCam system is an effective technological way to manage driver risk that offers a number of benefits. These include a method of revealing "mystery damage" and exonerating drivers in traffic accident and other situations.

The system is the implementation of a cab-mounted camera that shows two images, one of the operator and the other of the road ahead. The camera routinely records in a closed loop manner, mostly recording over its data. However, whenever the system is triggered by bad driving, e.g., hard braking, swerving and more, the camera 'grabs' a 12-second clip of the occurrence.

This allows management review of potentially dangerous situations, accidents, near-misses, etc. Based on what is seen, operators may be counseled on better driving practices or other appropriate action taken. In the case of accidents, there is proof positive of whatever occurred.

According to Lisk, as well as fleet managers who have used the system, this is a method that offers a large prevention component since it documents risky driving behavior that would otherwise not be uncovered unless an accident occurs. In the following audio interview with Lisk, you will get an overview of the advantages this type of monitoring provides, how it is received by drivers and should be implemented by management, and the type of safety improvements a fleet manager might expect to receive.

In addition to the audio interview, we are able to show you two examples of actual DriveCam footage. The one to the right shows a near miss with a motorcycle that wasn't seen when the driver of a DriveCam-equipped vehicle turned right at an intersection.

This second brief video is of a driver falling asleep while operating his vehicle. It shows the system's split screen that offers a view of both the operator and the road ahead.

Download PDF In the following audio interview of about 40 minutes, Lisk provides an overview of the DriveCam system, provides case study information, and discusses how it increases operator safety. We also have online a PDF version of the PowerPoint presentation that accompanied Lisk's presentation. If you'd like to access that to go along with the audio, do so using the link button shown to the right.

Note: The audio will play without downloading any files onto your computer. If you hear the interview at 'chipmunk speed,' you will need to download the latest version of Adobe's free Flash player.
